Work continues on the site to prepare the full length of the new Telford Street extension to open later this month. At the same time, masonry, framing, roofing and sitework continue to form the new edge to the reshaped Brighton Mills. The bulk of the site activity for the next few months, however, will be excavating the front half of the site down more than 12 feet to construct the foundations and slab of the new underground garage.
The garage will contain spaces for 242 cars, a maintenance shop, bike and other storage, and several mechanical spaces. To make room for all that, JMA and J. Derenzo & Co. must first relocate about 130,000 tons of earth. The newly installed steel sheeting will hold back the sides of the excavation as it gets deeper.
As much earth as possible will be reused on site. The majority, however must be loaded on 10-15 trucks daily and hauled to disposal locations, a process that should take until February. As the excavation reaches the bottom in certain portions by year’s end, concrete workers will arrive to begin forming the garage foundations.
